The institution’s mission statement explicitly supports artistic-scientific research. It is not currently possible to pursue doctoral studies through artistic practice alone, however it is possible to pursue doctoral studies by thesis.

The evaluation committee of 4 or 5 is comprised of 1 to 2 supervisors, an external examiner and 2 additional academic staff.

Programme Structure
3 years minimum.
The mode of study (full or part-time) and the length of the PhD varies according to individual students, who may be juggling professional commitments.
At the end of the first semester, a supervision agreement is produced. Thereafter, progress reports are given every semester.
Ethics are introduced from the start of the programme according to the needs of individuals.

There are regular internal evaluation meetings.
Supervision
Students work with 1 – 2 supervisors (students are encouraged to work with 2 supervisors).
The institution is working on training for supervisors.
Staff engaged in supervision are expected to have a professorship or habilitation. There is no fixed quota of hours allocated to supervision.
The allocation of research time for staff conforms to the standard Austrian model. Sabbaticals are offered and there is access to other resources for research projects (eg personnel).

Staff engaged in supervision are expected to hold a PhD. Training for supervisors is informal.

Consent of supervisor – the institution is moving towards a system which involves a review panel.

There have been 22 completions in the last 5 years.

6 months institutional support for those applying for scholarship and project funding.
Student Support
Students benefit from regular events (eg PhD conferences); some financial support to attend conferences elsewhere; advice on funding; workshops and advanced skills training.
