3rd Cycle in the Arts

This is an international database of 3rd cycle awards in the European Higher Arts Education Area, developed within the Creator Doctus project (2018-2021), to identify possible examples of practice in developing and supporting artistic research.

Exposition / Exhibition (including performance)

The assessment and dissertation word count are in the process of being defined. The examination panel comprises 1 to 2 external examiners and 3 to 4 internal examiners.

 

Programme Structure

4 years

Students receive training on research methods annually. There is no ethics training.

Progress review is carried out annually. Students interact with their peers through group seminars, symposia, group supervision, and masterclasses. At institutional level, students are involved in research seminars, teaching, and symposia. Students engage with the professional world through collaborative and live projects.

Undergraduate & Masters Research

  • Research training is embedded at Masters level study.
  • Research training is embedded at BA level study.

Quality Assurance & Enhancement

The institution follows the EPFL.

Supervision

Students normally work with 2 supervisors, one from HEAD and one from EPFL, and two is considered the optimum number.

Each supervisor is allocated 50h per year. Currently, no supervision training is provided.

Staffing

15 members of the staff hold a PhD; 100% of tutors hold a 3rd Cycle Award.

3 staff members are currently undertaking a 3rd cycle award in the institution.

No research time is allocated in the work contract.

Overall, responsibility for managing 3rd cycle programme resides with Prof. Anthony Masure.

1 to 2 students join the programme annually.

Currently there are 5 registered students in the PhD programme.

To date, no students have graduated from the programme, with the first graduation due in 2021.

 

Student Funding

Student fees are covered by institutional funding. Students receive a 4-year contract, where they are partially a PhD (40%) and partially an assistant in the school (40%). Each PhD student receives approximately 4000 CHF per month.

    Students gain experience of teaching at BA and MA level study.

The PhD programme is established in partnership with EPFL (EDAR).
