Part-time can be negotiated but PhDs must complete within 6 years to maintain their right to study.
Assessment
Public defence (Viva)
Public presentation of completed art works, attended (if possible) by external examiner. After feedback on the work and the critical reflection, the Viva Voce is planned.
The assessment panel consists of 1 internal examiner and 2 external examiners.

There is no dissertation requirement.
Programme Structure
The programme structure includes methods training and ethics training is provided by the Norwegian Artistic Research Programme: 6 courses (2-4 days), 6 artistic research forums (conferences, 3 where they have to present their project). Research methodologies and ethics integrated in basic courses.
The programme and peer learning are also supported by group research seminars, teaching, symposia and workshops. It also includes public engagement activity and collaborative/live projects. There is an annual progress review.

Quality Assurance & Enhancement
The QAE policy and strategy and metrics are in development —in the process of establishing an institutional specific PhD in Artistic Research degree with a view to having it in place in 2021.
Supervision
The supervisory team is identified in consultation with the PhD candidate.
The PhD candidate identifies his/her supervisor(s), or s/he is helped by staff to identify suitable supervisors who will support his/her PhD.
The usual and optimum number of supervisors is 2-3. 100hrs are allocated (60hrs primary supervisor/ 40hrs second supervisor.
There are annual seminars for supervisors.
Staffing
No staff currently hold 3rd Cycle Awards.
1 out of 50 (0.5%) members of staff are currently undertaking a 3rd Cycle Award.
The institution recognises research and allocate research time by mutual negotiation with the Dean. 100% of staff are active artists and filmmakers and part-time academic staff. Their professional activity counts as artistic research.

Student Admissions
The doctoral programme is advertised nationally and internationally.

One to two students join the programme annually.
Currently there are 7 registered students in the PhD programme in artistic research.
To date 4 students have graduated from the programme.
Student Funding
NO fees. Students are on a full salary and modest budget for production.
Student Support
Doctoral students have access to facilities in the institution, including:

Students are supported via peer learning, group seminars, symposia, group supervision, masterclasses and research and ethics training. Relevant production and post-production equipment for filmmakers and those working in related art forms.
Additional financial support is provided to:

- Students gain experience of teaching at BA and MA level study
